The abbreviation from the name of the autocompany ABC is deciphered as All British (Machine) Company. This motorcycle firm was based in 1912 in Weybridge, having placed the production nearby to the local autodrome.
The ABC company existed and earlier, but she was engaged in exclusively aviation engines and accessories. Grenville Bradshaw managed to work not in one company and found glory of the good engineer. And in 1912 he was appointed the chief engineer in motorcycle office of ABC. Modernisation of a 350-cm motorcycle Douglas became its first success in this company. Its constructive improvements helped this bike to break a record of speed in 116 kilometres per hour.
Soon companies produce their own two-cylinder, engine displacement in 498 cubic centimeters. Among the technical features of this bike can be noted, the upper gas distributor and the crank mechanism of the unusual design of the pistons had a different number of terminals. Both cylinders arranged in line.
A year later the enterprise was let out by some models of sports motorcycles on which the company specialised, but success they did not achieve. Did not shine with the performances and cars of other brands with ABC engines. However soon the situation nevertheless changed. Jack Emerson by the new car in a class of 500 cubic centimetres, equipped with the ABC engine, broke a record on the next Bruklendskaya Route in Veybridzhe. Inspired by this success, specialists of the company let out two new models TT and Tourism. They differed, in particular, an arrangement of valves. On them the three-speed transmission Armstrong was established. On a frame established flat springs.
In the summer, literally for some months prior to the beginning of the First World War, the company completely moved in Walton - on - the Thames. But right after transferring of production complexes the hardened fights began. Defensive orders of the company were consolidated only to production of engines for various equipment. For this reason the ABC company managed to make and civil motorcycles. Own four-speed transmission with kulisny system was developed. It also was established on new models of 1915-1916. Other their feature was the podressorny frame. For those times similar decisions looked a little unusually, but cars were bought not bad.
In 1919 the company endured one more moving, already in the Valve - on - the Thames. Grenville Bradshaw still remained the chief engineer, and undertook creation of new model. On it flat 398-cubic centimeters, very modern and easy engine with two cylinders was established. It is interesting that the piston stroke did not get to the bottom cylinders. The cranked shaft with rods was established in a case over which was a magnet with a gear drive. The carburettor submitted fuel directly through the collector heated up by exhausts. The engine took place in a wide double frame.
In this motorcycle protective guards for feet were provided even. These and some other features of model allowed to call it the real break in the field of the motorcycle industry. But the bike had also some serious shortcomings, especially in the gas distributor valve. Therefore in the market it appeared a bit later, and cost of production was unreasonably high.
Besides motorcycles, the ABC company let out also scooters. Today there are some models of the scooters best of which Scootamota designed by the same Grenville Bredshou is considered. This means movement had one tubular frame, and also wheels in diameter of 16 inches. The new one-cylinder 124-cubic centimeters engine settled down over a back wheel, and even higher the fuel tank was established.
Sales volumes of Scootamota did not decrease up to 1923. The public liked this model of the scooter, and the company got quite good profit. But it did not rescue from financial crash of ABC. In 1921 the Aircraft Sopwith firm, some time carrying out assembly of motorcycles of ABC was closed, and the enterprise simply did not manage to survive independently.
