The real son of «Foggy Albion» and proud British Jeffrey de Frevill at the beginning of the XX century based the automotive Alvis. It co-operated with Bentley that, of course, well affected the car future. The goods existed in the market about 50 years, and were recognised not only in Great Britain, but also are far outside of the British Isles.
The company history began with small plant on production of pistons. The First World War passed for firm practically without negative consequences, even the project of a sports car was developed. After war the project together with a trademark was redeemed by Thomas George John, and in 1920 was realised.
Alvis 10/30 – the first sports car of the British brand which had the engine with four cylinders and an aluminium body. Speed gathered by it reached nearly 100 km/h. Assembly of these cars was rather well adjusted.
The Alvis 11/40 model which has been let out in 1921 became the following development. The volume of its engine already was more (over 1500 cubic centimetres). Later the range expanded to 5 updatings. In appearance the car was similar to an insect – low, smooth and long. But in 1922 of business of firm began to get bad, monetary difficulties became fault to everything.
The enterprise undertook Buckingham assembly that though somehow to correct situation. Those years at a board wheel the company stood Smith-Clark and Dunn. By 1923 they managed to improve a situation, the Alvis 12/50 car then was developed. In this model the new chassis and the volume compressors influencing capacity was remarkable. This nice cabriolet gathered speed to 112 km/h, had capacity in 50 horses, 1,5 litres of volume and a mechanical transmission. In 1924 the firm experienced again difficulties, and it was necessary to reconsider production structure.
In a separate line of history of the company the cars created for races – FWD with a forward drive, and also Alvis TA-17/45 with six cylinders are written down. Certainly, such models were a new word in mechanical engineering, however, reliability did not differ. They served as a prototype for automobile two-litre Alvis Silver Eagle created in 1929.
In three years of engineers of plant the interesting idea to let out a sportive with a low frame of Speed visited, and the largest volume of the engine reached 4,4 litres. The sedan of Silver Crest and model 17/70, given rise to the range which is let out after war became the following remarkable models. In 1950 made Alvis TA-21 equipped with the three-litre engine with six cylinders. This model had a set of updatings, various by the form bodies, transmissions, brakes, to technical characteristics. Besides, the internal furniture of cars differed also. The Alvis Grey Lady model is remarkable in this plan. In general, these solid and strict compartments were beautiful, comfortable and expensive that negatively affected competitiveness of the enterprise.
The successful beginning of activity, alas, did not guarantee further success. The firm was pursued constantly by difficulties. In 1965 it was absorbed by Rover, and gradually the enterprise was reorientated in plant on production of military equipment and aviation engines. But as automaker the Alvis company was included strongly into the British and world history.
