Citroen, the French automobile company specializing on release of cars. Enters into Peugeot corporation. The headquarters is in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
For the first time the logo with "a double chevron" appeared in the automobile market in 1913 when masterful Andree Citroen and his friends began to deliver transmissions to some producers of cars.
Shortly before the beginning of World War I Citroen got a ground on Zhavel Embankment to the southwest from the center of Paris. There he constructed the most up-to-date to measures of that time the plant on production of ammunition equipped with the best industrial equipment.
During World War I at this plant about 55 thousand shells and cartridges in day were made. Serious and very profitable business, but only in a wartime. However production of ammunition appeared not only by way to earn good money – on this "material" technologies of mass production were perfected... cars.
In 1912 Citroen, as they say, for the general development visited the USA where in Detroit it was on the spot struck by the plant of Ford which let out 150 000 copies of model T legendary nowadays that year – in 71 times more, than Renault which was in the lead in France.
Till 1917 on the route between Roann and Ke-de-Zhavel in the conditions of usual traffic about ten cars of various producers passed tests. Secretly from all Andre Citroen tested and sorted and at the plant such known American cars as "Buick", "Studebekker", at the same time studying possibility of a mass production which soon and began. Actually the first CITROEN became at the same time and the first serially made car in Europe.
in 1924 Andre Citroen inspired with idea of distribution of the cars worldwide lays the foundation for the international network of subsidiaries in Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Milan, Geneva and Copenhagen. Export volume in 1924 made 17.000 cars.
Same year for the purpose of production of cars the Automobiles Citroen Joint-stock company with authorized capital of 100 million francs is founded. Daily release of cars reaches 300 pieces.
In order that it is sure and in large volumes to realize the made cars it is necessary to go in for marketing policy. It is known now to all. And here in far 20th years of last century, Citroen continues to form and develop the dealer network in France, and it was the first commercial organization which deserved the name "dealer network": if in 1919 there were only 200 agents, in 1925 their quantity increased to 5000. In the same time "occupation of territories" is made – subsidiaries in Madrid and Algeria are created. In Clichy (suburb of Paris) there begin work the forge shops having exclusively hi-tech equipment: 50 latest metalworking machines. These shops became the biggest smithy of Europe.
After the first successful crossing of Sahara in 1923 the second expedition on cars "Croisiere noire" will be organized. From October, 1924 to July, 1925 16 people and 8 semi-track laying vehicles of the central African expedition Citroen travel from Kolomb Beshar to Tananariva. This travel 20.000 km long was undertaken naturally with the research purposes.
Advertizing – the trade engine. Axiom? Probably yes.For the advertizing purposes it was used neither much, nor it isn't enough – the Eiffel Tower! From 1925 to 1934 on it, in Paris enormous letters highlighted the name CITROEN. Writing of letters of such height required 250.000 electric bulbs and 600 km of a wire. For the advertizing purposes any opportunities, even illusory, for example "invoicing" by a smoke in the sky of the surname were used. No means were felt sorry for achievement of the objectives of production and advertizing. But there is more to come. The operating model of plant of 15х2 m in size made for children is not less interesting and for adults as in details reproduces assembly production at plant Zhavel. Excursions on the Citroen plants begin with survey of this model. Monthly Andre Citroen redeems the last page of the most popular French newspaper (circulation of 15 million copies) for advertizing of the production.
For rhythmical ensuring the extending production Citroen, using the advanced technique, makes specialization of each of the plants on various productions. In the 15th district of Paris the plant Grenel who specializes on production and installation of forward axes and the back bridge for the new B14 model enters a system.
In the same time there is a first model of the P21 series realized on the basis of Citroen C6 from which the car "received" as well 2,4 liter motor. Easier P17 model, was collected on the basis of the military car on the Citroen C4 chassis and was equipped with the 1,6 l four-cylinder engine.
What qualitative cars wouldn't seem at that time, they all the same were required to be repaired and served. Campaign always paid Citroen and pays special attention to preparation and training of the technicians, and the first steps on this way were taken those far 20th years of the XX century. Citroen publishes the first guide to servicing and car repairs for the dealers and the catalog of spare parts. It developed an order and procedure of replacement of standard mechanical spare parts.
To Brussels-Forest there begins work the Belgium's first plant on assembly of cars (5CV, B12, B14). One more new plant specializes in the British city of Slou on production of bodies and assembly of 5CV Trefle cars. This plant is considered the most modern in Great Britain at that time.
