Lagonda – the name which the American Indians gave to one small valley near the Great Lakes. The same name was brought with himself to Great Britain by Uilbern Gunn – the American with the Scottish roots who arrived to England in the 1890th years. At first Gunn participated in development of steamships, and then began to assemble motorcycles which were called by Lagonda.
In 1904 Uilbern Gunn asked for the help the engineer Krenmer behind collecting a three-wheeled car with the two-cylinder engine. In 1907 the car was upgraded in 4-wheeled and re-equipped with the 20 h.p. 4-cylinder motor. With the little later the engine was replaced more powerful 30-strong 6-cylinder.
In 1913 in production a new series of easy cars was started. The Lagonda 11,1 HP car equipped with the 1,1 liters engine in one block with a transmission became the first model. The car with the bearing body was quite perspective technically, and in 1920 model 11,1 HP became 11,9HP. However the founding father of the company Uilbern Gunn the same year died.
Nevertheless, the firm continued to function. In 1926 the Lagonda 14/60 model executed in several options was presented. The car from this Speed series had the 2 liters engine with two cam-shafts located in a head of the block of cylinders. Shaft in the form of L-shaped yokes by means of which cams of the gas-distributing mechanism put valves in action were made.
The Lagonda 16/65 car with the 2,6 liters 6-cylinders power unit which in 1935 was increased to 3,6 liters became the following model. The same motor, only already with a capacity of 3,2, equipped the Selector Special car released in 1931. On this model established the semi-automatic transmission of production Maybach allowing to switch 4 speeds back and 8 forward.
In 1933 the Lagonda 16/80 model equipped with the 6-cylinder motor from Crossley firm was published. In 1934 the sports Rapier equipped with the engine with two camshafts with a working volume of 1,1 liters was presented. In the same time in production started the M-45 car on which the 6-cylinder the upper valve Meadows motor of 4,5 liters was installed. At the same time Lagonda for the first time took part in competitions, having become the fourth in the race Tourist Trophy. However the global success came a year when the Lagonda M-45 car won Le Mans later. This car equipped with the 115 h.p. engine gathered speed to 153 km/h, and routes passed with an average speed of 124 km/h.
It should be noted that racing modification differed from serial short base, and became a basis for production of the Rapid M-45R model. Every year the machine was upgraded. As the following option there was a LG-45 car, and the initial model in 1937 was re-equipped with the Sanction engine which power made 130 horsepowers.
In 1935 the new owner Alain Goode appointed Walter Bentley the technical director of the company of Lagonda. Together with it production of the Rapier model was stopped, namely Walter Bentley, using M-45, and created the LG-45 car.
Then modification of LG-6 which differed in an independent torsion suspension bracket and hydraulic brakes followed. The body of this model was lower than the previous. For production of this car the 6-cylinder engine with a working volume of 2,6 liters was used. As a result the Lagonda LG-6 car was recognized as a prestigious high-speed sedan which, besides, differed in the high level of comfort.
In 1937 on the chassis of the LG-6 model the most magnificent Lagonda car with the V12 engine of 4,5 liters was assembled. This model also had a forward independent torsion suspension bracket and a 4-staged transmission which was established separately from the motor that was the unusual decision. Assembled the car on the lonzheronny frame made in the form of the letter "X". It provided design durability. Besides, suspension brackets at the edges equipped with hydrodriving jacks for raising of each of wheels. Lagonda V12 at the engine capacity of 175 of "horses" could disperse to 175 km/h, and dispersal to 100 km/h happened in 14 seconds. Fuel consumption averaged 25 liters on 100 kilometers. The car recognized as classics of the 1930th years was released in number of 2 thousand copies.
After the end of World War II the company was redeemed by David Brown corporation then, as a result of merge, the Aston Martin-Lagonda firm was formed. The six-cylinder engines developed by Walter Bentley began to be used in production of sports Aston Martin cars. At the same time, despite prestigiousness of Lagonda cars, their production it was reduced, and in 1958 in general it was stopped. New shops and the enterprises were guided, generally on production of Aston Martin cars.
In 1961 the car with Lagonda emblem was released again. It was the Rapid-model the massive and bulky car equipped with the 6-cylinder motor from Aston Martin. Production Rapid proceeded about two years.
After long absence in the automobile market, in 1976 the sedan of Lagonda which the management of the company declared as the car of a representative class was presented to public. Huge, but not really attractive car was equipped with the V8 engine with a working volume of 5,3 liters. Power of the motor made 340 horsepowers. Production of this model proceeded with breaks till 1992, but some copies were let out.
After that the brand Lagonda in mass media and talk of motorists, appeared less frequently. However in September, 2008 the Aston Martin corporation declared plans to revive a legendary trademark for the purpose of release of the cars other than the sports.
