Lincoln Motor Company – one of the most famous American producers of luxury cars around the world. The history of the company began in 1917 when during World War I Henry Liland sold the equity stake of the Cadillac company to General Motors then founded absolutely new firm which received the name Lincoln – in memory of the lost president of the United States.
Initially the company was engaged in production of engines for military planes, and after war, in 1920, Henry Liland united the opportunities with the son therefore they managed to release the first car - Lincoln V8. It was the model of a representative class which was supplied with the brand new V-shaped engine developed at plant of the company. However, despite excellent equipment, this car became commercially unsuccessful.
In the next two years at the company financial difficulties began and, in 1922 it was redeemed by Henry Ford. As a part of Ford concern the Lincoln V8 model, thanks to the technical characteristics, became one of the prestigious representative cars, best in a class. At that time it had only one competitor – the Cadillac brand cars which weren't inferior presentableness and power to Lincoln cars.
The 30th years of the XX century began with sad events: Henry Liland, the founder of the company, died at the age of 88 years. The division of Lincoln was headed by Henry Ford's son – Edsel. In the same 1932 the company started letting out new models of brand. On court of consumers Lincoln KV was presented. The car was equipped with the powerful 12-cylinder V-shaped motor. And in 1936 Lincoln Zephyr descended from the conveyor.
After an exit of this model of sale of Lincoln grew by 9 times. It was more sports car with smooth lines of a body. Zephyr which had the 110 horsepowers V-shaped 12-cylinder engine and a mechanical three-speed transmission gathered speed to 140 km/h. This model was very popular, somewhat it became a Lincoln brand symbol. Zephyr let out up to 1942 until because of World War II production stopped.
In 1940 on the basis of this car the legendary Lincoln Zephyr Continental model – the first luxury model was designed. Eugene Gregory, Edsel Ford's friend became the chief engineer of this car. The founder awarded the child with a big body with smooth forms, a removable tarpaulin roof which hid between a luggage carrier and back seats, and also smart leather salon, with a huge back sofa. The car was issued untill 1948.
Progress didn't stand still, all directions of human activity, including automotive industry actively developed in post-war time. So in 1946 Lincoln Continental took part in the race "Indi-500". By 1948 the market was entered by Lincoln Cosmopolitan – replacement to the first generation of Zephyr Continental.
In 1955 absolutely new Lincoln Continental version was issued. And a year more later the first car which descended from the conveyor there was Continental Mark II. Thanks to this car, the Lincoln company endured revival. Initially the car was planned as a cabriolet, but only two cars without top as a result were designed. The car was equipped with the 285 horsepowers engine, bright modern design and the price exceeding Cadillac car cost for two thousand dollars that as a result was strongly reflected in volumes of sale of a car. The same year the new Lincoln Premier model was issued.
After Ford redeemed the Lincoln company, and up to the beginning of the 70th all cars of the Lincoln brand were issued on original platforms. Only engines were borrowed other models of concern. But as a result for the purpose of economy all cars of the Ford company began to be issued on the unified platforms. Because of this innovation style and design of "Lincolns" gradually exchanged.
In the mid-eighties the division of Lincoln released the luxury new car - Lincoln Continental MK Vll. This car was constructed on the basis of Ford Fox, and represented a two-door compartment which body was executed in an aerodynamic form. The car was equipped with the four-speed transmission which is electronic and regulated by a pneumosuspension bracket, the Windsor V8 engine with the coupled final collector, consecutive electronic injection of fuel and anti-blocking 4th ABS system.
Also modification of this model – Lincoln Mk VII LSC (Luxury Sport Coupe) was let out. It possessed the powerful engine in 225 horsepowers, differing thus in smart leather salon and stylish disks. MK VII LSC was presented as alternative to sports models of the European BMW and Mercedes-Benz brands.
In 1995 the next Lincoln Continental, long time remaining by a leader of brand was let out. It was the four-door sedan which was equipped with the 264 horsepowers V-shaped 8-cylinder engine, a 4-staged transmission and the forward drive.
The Lincoln Town Car car – a luxury full-size sedan with the back drive became the following model which descended from the conveyor and became a new leader. The car was completed with the V-shaped 8-cylinder engine, a four-speed transmission and gathered the maximum speed of 180 km/h. In comparison with last models, the car possessed softer streamline shapes, absolutely new dashboard, seats and door panels – all this was executed in style of "organic design".
In honor of the 75-year anniversary the company let out the limited Town Car series under the name Diamond Anniversary. The car differed in excellent leather salon, the dashboard executed under a tree, existence of the "built-in" mobile phone, a mirror with function of blackout, a compass, the JBL audio system and traction assist system. Besides, the lower part of the car was painted in other color that gave to the dynamism car.
In 1997 the Lincoln company started release of one of the brightest representatives of the model range – Lincoln Navigator. This car thanks to the appearance and technical characteristics created a new segment in a class of SUVs, and further took only the leading positions among similar cars.
The first model was developed on the basis of Ford Expedition, but literally in two years it was laid off and replaced by more perfect. The new car had a little changed body, absolutely new design of salon and an independent back suspension bracket. This miracle of equipment with the 5,4 liters V-shaped 8-cylinder engine and 304 horsepowers was completed. In a back suspension bracket instead of the rigid bridge the special mechanism similar to what were established on representative cars was installed that allowed to make the car course unusually smooth. Besides, it was equipped with the most powerful disk brakes in the class.
In 1999 the classical option of a sports sedan of Lincoln was for the first time presented in New York. The car became at once popular among fans of luxury big sports cars. The model was developed on the DEW98 platform from automobile giants Ford and Jaguar, and was equipped with V8 engine, a mechanical transmission, uniform distribution of the weight 50/50, and also the back drive. It allowed the car to become alternative to the European and Japanese sports sedans.
Further the updated versions Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln Navigator, Lincoln MKT and many others were issued. All of them made a certain success. As a result the Lincoln company created to itself reputation of one of the best producers of luxury cars, and its production deservedly enjoys popularity.
