On production of cars around the world it is considered one of the oldest companies the American enterprise Oldsmobile. Under this brand started assembling cars in the XIX century. And it is necessary to thank for it Rensom Olds, after all his interest in all new in equipment allowed to make a set of discoveries.
Everything began in far 1891 when Rensom organized the first carmaker under the name Olds Motor Vehicle Company. Same year he developed and collected the first similarity of the car. The car was equipped with three wheels and worked together. And the next year Olds designed the real car and supplied it with the petrol engine.
1899 was not really favorable for the company, and in view of several reasons it had to be reorganized. The new name - Olds Motor Works resulted. Also also the owner of the enterprise changed: the company was redeemed by the dealer in wood – mister Smith, and within 10 years was her owner.
After two years, Rensom Olds released the car which was called as Curbed Dash. And though its enterprise initially I specialized on production of elite cars, this baby became the real symbol of the company. The model was equipped with the 1,6 liters single-cylinder horizontal four-cycle engine and 4,5 horsepowers, a mechanical 2-staged transmission and gathered speed to 20 km/h. The ratio of cost of this car and its technical characteristics was so pleasant that Curbed Dash became the most popular car of the time.
The company quickly grew and developed. Cars were literally swept by buyers, and the financial position of Rensom Olds was stabilized. However in 1901 at plant of the company there was a fire which destroyed practically all enterprise. Thanks to the saved-up capital production Olds Motor Works was transferred from Detroit to Lensing where the company continued to work more than one hundred years.
The Olds Motor Works enterprise quickly recovered after the fire, and by 1905 sales of cars of the Oldsmobile brand reached a record point in 5000 copies in a year. But, despite it, Rensom Olds sold the equity stake and left the company.
At that time in the American automobile building market there were some manufacturing leaders as one of which the General Motors company by right was considered. Her head, William Durant, the young and successful company therefore in 1908 it attached Olds Motor Works to the concern interested. From this point the company began to be called as Oldsmobile.
Under the leadership of Durant the new era of development of the enterprise began. At the first stage in production the bias on release of inexpensive cars for mass consumption – so to speak, for middle class and youth became. But here faced General Motors a problem of marketing character. The first word in the name of the Old brand in translation designated "Old" because of what consumers had an adverse association as if the car intended for old men. Having conducted numerous researches and having weighed all possible options, the motto of brand chose the phrase of "young at heart" that means "who is young heart". This step allowed to keep the name of brand and to get rid of unpleasant association.
Release of the luxury car was the following step of the company. So on court of the public Oldsmobile Limited was presented. Despite the body cabriolet issued by a genuine leather the salon and the six-cylinder 11,6-liter engine allowing to disperse a car to 60 km/h, the car wasn't to the taste to buyers. The model didn't make success and after it was recognized commercially unprofitable, it laid off. In total 159 copies of such cars were let out. Further were laid hopes on the inexpensive cars available practically to all segments of the population.
Big break happened in the fifties when the General Motors company released the legendary car - Rocket 88. This model differed in design absolutely unusual the then. Besides, she was one of the most powerful representatives of this brand – the machine had the 277 horsepowers eight-cylinder engine, and could accelerate to 100 km/h behind the little more slowly, than in 9 seconds. The Rocket 88 model enjoyed wide popularity that allowed corporation to leave competitors far behind.
Further the 60th followed successful, an era of "brawny" cars. The corporation constantly developed and introduced new technologies, and in 1964 brought to the market one more legendary model of a car – Muscle car 4-4-2. This car was the response of the Oldsmobile brand to entry into the market of the first car from a sort "brawny" – Pontiac GTO.
Muscle car 4-4-2 was equipped with the 310 horsepowers V-shaped 8-cylinder engine (it was the most powerful motor for that time), and completed with a 4-speed transmission, the strengthened springs, a dual exhaust system, the cross stabilizer, and also the double air cleaner. And despite the active competition from other automobile brands (all automobile producers tried to oppose it the model), Oldsmobile Muscle car was recognized as the best among all representatives of the class.
In two years, in 1966, the model of the first sports serial car of America with the forward drive and an automatic transmission descended from the conveyor. This car showed to producers and consumers new opportunities of automotive industry.
And though many Oldsmobile models were successful, in the next years sales, and, therefore, and production declined. Cars of this brand enjoyed the lesser popularity. As a result the General Motors corporation made the decision to the maximum to reduce a ruler and release of Oldsmobile cars in order to avoid financial losses.
After long calm 1989 was marked by entry into the market of a new car – Oldsmobile Silhouette. The front-wheel minivan was completed with the 3,4-liter V6 engine with a power of 188 horsepowers with electronic system of injection of fuel, a 4-staged automatic transmission, separate central air, ABS on disk brakes, differing in existence of seats with the electric drive. The car periodically was modified and issued up to 2004.
In 1990 the market was entered by the Bravada model which became the only Oldsmobile car of a class of SUVs. The car represented a car of the increased passability in a body the versatile person, differed in leather salon and was equipped with the V-shaped 6-cylinder motor volume in 4,3-lt and 193 horsepowers. Besides, at the request of the buyer the unit was completed with the computer and the mobile phone. The Bravada model was developed on the basis of Chevrolet Blazer, however, the new car turned out more powerful and better completed. This model was laid off in 2003.
In 1993 on a motor show in Detroit the new model of a sedan of Oldsmobile Aurora was presented. The car was equipped with a sports suspension bracket, a four-stage automatic transmission, disk brakes with ABS and the 4-liter V8 engine from Northstar developing power in 253 horsepowers. This model became the most popular in a ruler.
Demand for a car of the Oldsmobile brand continued to fall. Capital investments in new technical development didn't justify themselves, and in 2004 the General Motors corporation made the decision on removal from production of all Oldsmobile cars. For the history, and it is more than hundred years, under this name 35 million cars were released. It is possible to say with confidence that the Oldsmobile company played a big role in the history of automotive industry.1 - 50 | 51 - 100 | 101 - 150 | 151 - 200 | 201 - 250 | 251 - 300 | 301 - 309
