At any Englishman development of the British automotive industry is associated with legendary brand - Rolls-Royce. The history of the company began in far 1904 when two of her founders, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, signed the contract on creation of the Rolls-Royce Motor Holding company. The logo of firm represented two weaved letters "R" and a copy-book of "Rolls-Royce" on a red background, but after Henry Royce's death the background was changed to the black. In 1906 in Paris the first chassis of newly made firm - Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP was presented. Absolutely new car with the 6-cylinder engine – Silver Ghost which motor ensured incredibly silent functioning was soon released. In a car interior with this power unit tick of hours per driving time was audible even. Cars were developed on a basis "Royce Prototype" which to 1907 it was let out about 100.
Silver Ghost was so popular that it called nearly the most known car on the planet. The producer tried not "to lose brand" and in 1907 advertized him as "the best car in the world". And in 1919 serious modernization of the engine was carried out: the Rolls-Royce company established electric start of the motor.
The model was very successful. Engineers of Rolls-Royce constantly improved it that, respectively, attracted increase in prices for a car. But it didn't push away buyers at all. Popularity of the car grew so quickly that in 1921 the branch in Springfield was necessary to open the companies. Nelson Rockefeller became the first owner of "Silver Spirit". In 7 years of work in the USA about 1700 cars were sold.
In crisis 30th years, without regard to the Great depression, the company managed to keep positions in the automobile market, and in 1931 Rolls-Royce got Bentley competitor company which got to a difficult financial position. It was the reasonable step from the management, after all the Bentley trademark at that time already had reputation of the producer of expensive, sound cars and limousines.
Since 1949 the released classical luxury cars - a class received the names Silver Wraith, Silver Dawn and Silver Cloud. And already in the 50th the prestige of the company rose by so high level that Rolls-Royce cars ordered ruling and aristocratic cliques of Britain, and also the whole world. So, for example, in 1950 the royal family in the person of the princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh was ordered by Rolls-Royces Phantom-IV.
The firm prospered, but the foundation laid by founders was enough only for 30 years. In the sixties recession in this connection position of the company specializing at that time on production of aviation engines and working on the Rolls-Royce-Corniche model became absolutely shaky began. And on February 4, 1971 the Rolls-Royce organization was officially declared by bankrupt. However the British government didn't allow to fail to national property, having invested in it 250 million dollars and having revived "legend".
Soon the company was divided into two production shops: Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd which released cars, and also accessories to them, and Rolls-Royce Ltd., working on the aviation industry, diesel engines and locomotives. The second office, since 1971, worked for the state. And in 1987 it was privatized then replaced the name with Rolls-Royce Plc.
In 1980 Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd company. Again it appeared on the verge of crash in this connection, and it was redeemed by military-industrial concern Vickers.
