The Wanderer company (in translation from German – "the pedestrian tourist", "traveler") till 1911 actively was engaged in release of motorcycles and bicycles. Production of cars began after the engineer Ettore Bugatti suggested to realize the project of the small easy car which after refusal of Wanderer the Peugeot company began to release, having called it Bebe. But in 1911 in a mass production of the Wanderer company the W-1 Puppchen car equipped with the 4-cylinder motor with a working volume of 1,2 liters was also started. The first model of this car was double – a driver's seat and the passenger settled down one behind another. This car in a consequence was used as a reconnaissance vehicle as it was the small size and possessed small weight, then was ideally suited for remote districts.
But Wanderer W-1 Puppchen was modified in 1914 therefore there was a W-2 model – triple in which the driver's place settled down ahead, but in the middle, near two passenger seats. In this car the motor with a working volume of 1,2 liters was installed. The little also the Wanderer W-4 car which was issued till 1925 was published later.
In 1921 the company began to make own four-cylinder engine which working volume made 1,5 liters. Over time the volume of the motor was increased almost to 2 liters. Such engine was used in production of a model range of Wanderer from W-6 to W-10.
In 1927 at a specialized automobile exhibition in Berlin the new W-11 model equipped with the six-cylinder engine with a working volume of 2,5 liters was presented. The 50 horsepowers motor was made according to the license of the Swiss firm Martini. This model was inexpensive and became quite popular. And in 1930 there was a sports car of Wanderer W-11S on which the engine with a working volume of 3 liters was installed.
In 1932 merge of several companies among which there was also Wanderer took place. The concern under the name Auto Union also included DKW, Horch and Audi. Since 1933 under the name of Wanderer cars with modern bodies and a forward independent suspension bracket were issued. In production the whole series of models with six-cylinder engines was started. Also Ferdinand Porsche participated in development of these cars. Such Wanderer models as W-21, W-22, W-23, W-45 and W-51 were let out.
Ferdinand Porsche developed model of the double sports Wanderer W-25K car. This model was equipped with the compressor line six-cylinder engine with a working volume of 1,95 liters, and diameter of the cylinder made 70 mm, and a piston stroke – 85 mm. Power of the motor didn't exceed 85 horsepowers. Installed a mechanical four-speed transmission, a suspension bracket on cross laminated springs in the car assembled on a spar frame with a cross-piece a letter X form and drum brakes. The maximum speed which the Wanderer W-25K car could develop, didn't exceed 153 kilometers per hour.
In 1940-1941 latest models of the Wanderer company - W-23 and W-24 were let out. These cars were equipped with motors with lateral valves, and also an independent suspension bracket of all wheels. After 1941 the Wanderer company officially stopped the existence.1 - 23
